FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the requirements to join?

A quick overview...

The Joliet Jets Y Swim Team is a year-round program that offers instruction and training to all swimmers, ages six and up, from beginners to elite.  There are two seasons:  The fall/winter season runs September to March and the spring/summer season runs April to August.  We are both a YMCA and USA Swimming club, which means our swimmers get the opportunity to compete in a wide variety of meets, although competition is not mandatory.  Likewise, there are no mandatory practice attendance requirements, with the exception of our national swimmers.  The Jets Y Swim Team supports the YMCA mission of building strong kids, strong families, and strong communities, and our coaches strive not only to build strong swimmers, but Caring, Honest, Respectful and Responsible individuals.

Team Mission

To develop individuals to their highest potential as athletes and leaders in life.

Team Vision

The vision of the JETS is to be known as the best youth sports experience in the area by providing professional coaches who inspire kids to share the same passion and dedication they have for the sport; by providing a unified team atmosphere that creates fun memories, long-lasting relationships, and a sense of community and belonging; by providing the education, instruction, and training necessary for excellence in the sport; and by developing the values and character traits of individuals who will make a positive impact on the world around them.

When and where are practices held?  Is practice attendance mandatory?

During the fall, winter and spring months, practices are held in the late afternoon and evening hours; during the months of June and July, practices are held in the mornings, however, some evening times are generally scheduled to accommodate families who cannot make the morning practices.  With the exception of our national team, there are no mandatory practice attendance requirements.  View the practice schedule for more specific times.  Visit the practice facilities page for more information about where practices are currently held.

When and where are swim meets held?  Is competition mandatory?

On average, the team competes about twice per month.  Swim meets generally take place on the weekends and are held at various locations around the Chicagoland area, usually within 45 minutes, although the team will occasionally attend travel meets that require a hotel stay.  Swimmers are not required to compete.  The team publishes a meet schedule, and each family can choose which days they would like to attend.

How do I try out?

Swim clinics are held at the beginning of the spring/summer season (April) and fall/winter season (September).  These clinics provide the best opportunity for kids to experience what the team is like, however, an evaluation can be scheduled at any point of the year, and mid-season registration is possible if approved by the head coach.  To set up an evaluation, or to find out more specific information, contact Coach Dave Hedden.
