Team mission: To develop individuals to their highest potential as athletes and leaders in life.
This program is designed to be an introductory, pre-competitive experience to the Joliet Jets Y Swim Team. An experienced swim coach will work with swimmers to develop proper technique in each of the four competitive strokes—Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Freestyle—in addition to teaching new skills, such as streamlines and racing dives, in order to prepare them for the competitive level. Swimmers may need more than one session of Flight School to become fully prepared for swim team. Most sessions will culminate with a small swim meet with the JETS, held on a Saturday morning. For more information, contact Coach Dave Hedden.
In order to be eligible for Flight School, swimmers must be able to swim 25 yards (one length of the YMCA pool) on their stomach and back, without a floatation device, while demonstrating a fundamental sense of balance, comfort and confidence in the water. All swimmers will be evaluated on the first day of each session to make sure Flight School is an appropriate choice, or you may contact Coach Dave to schedule an evaluation in advance.
Flight School practices two times per week for 45 minutes throughout a seven week session. A total of six sessions are offered each year at the Galowich YMCA and Smith YMCA branches. For the most current schedules, view the YMCA program brochures online at www.jolietymca.org.
It may take more than one session of Flight School for a child to become fully prepared for swim team; in fact, this is true in most cases. The Flight School coach will continually evaluate swimmers each session. When the coach feels a swimmer is ready for swim team, this assessment will be shared with the parent and, based on the time of season, swimmers may be able to join the JETS mid-season or may be advised to wait until the start of a new season.
